How to Paint a Wall: Step-by-Step Guide

Achieving a flawless finish with Placepaints Matt Paint is simple when you follow the right technique. Here’s how to get started:

Stir Your Paint Thoroughly

Before you begin, stir your paint well to ensure an even consistency. This helps distribute pigments evenly for a smooth and uniform application.

Box Your Paint for Consistency

If you're using multiple tins of the same colour, we strongly recommend boxing your paint. This means pouring all tins into a larger container and mixing them thoroughly. Why? Even with high-quality paint like Placepaints, subtle variations can occur between batches. Boxing ensures a consistent colour across all your walls.

Thin the Paint if Needed

For the first coat, especially on new plaster or porous surfaces, you may need to dilute the paint slightly to improve absorption and adhesion. Add up to 10% water and mix thoroughly before application. This helps the paint soak into the surface evenly, creating a solid base for your second coat.

Cut In First with a Brush

Start with a high-quality paintbrush to tackle edges, corners, and areas around sockets and skirting boards. This technique, known as cutting in, creates a sharp, professional-looking finish. Load the brush halfway up the bristles, tap off excess paint, and apply smooth, even strokes.

Use a Roller for the Main Surface

Once your edges are done, switch to a roller for the larger sections. Dip the roller into the paint and roll it back and forth on the tray to distribute evenly. Apply the paint in ‘W’ or ‘M’ motions for smooth coverage without streaks or roller marks.

Apply a Second Coat for Depth

Let the first coat dry for 2-4 hours before applying a second coat. No need to dilute this coat—apply it straight from the tin for rich depth and full coverage. Most walls won’t need more than two coats of Placepaints Matt Paint, thanks to its exceptional pigment and durability.

Remove Tape While the Paint is Wet

If you’ve used painter’s tape, remove it carefully while the second coat is still wet to ensure crisp, clean lines.

Let It Dry Fully

For best results, allow your newly painted wall to dry for at least 24 hours before moving furniture back or hanging decorations.

Reveal Your Transformed Space

Remove protective sheets, step back, and admire your fresh new walls. Whether you’ve created a calm, coastal retreat or a warm, sunlit haven, your space is now ready to inspire.
